Major fire in Torquay affects neighbouring apartments

At approximately 21.50 on Monday 20 December 2011 about 80 firefighters attended a major fire at the Conway Court Hotel in Warren Road in Torquay.  Residents from neighbouring properties were evacuated by the Fire Brigade as the crews tackled the blaze.

TMS Group manages several apartment blocks on Warren Road including Rock Walk Heights, which is situated directly next to the Conway Court Hotel, high above the Sea Front..  The residents at Rock Walk Heights, which is managed by our Area Property Manager Lucy Hoare, were directly affected by the fire and were evacuated by the Fire Brigade to safety.

By the morning of Tuesday 21 December 2011 the fire had caused major disruption to Torquay Town Centre and Sea Front traffic and had become a lead news item.

Lucy spent the morning of 21 December liaising with property owners and residents, buildings insurers and contractors following concerns that Rock Walk Heights may have suffered damage as a result of the fire next door.  Thankfully, heat and smoke damage was minimal and property owners were allowed to return to the building the same day.

Our Property Manager Andrew Stokes, who manages The Masts, another prestigious apartment block on Warren Road, received calls from some residents that their balcony furniture had been burnt as a result of hot ash from the fire falling onto the roof and balconies. . Andrew was able to liaise quickly with local contractors who gained access to the roof to inspect the damage, and insurers were notified accordingly.

TMS Property Director, Jonathan Holmes stated “Upon receiving notification of this incident, our first priority was to ensure the safety and welfare of property owners and residents and to ensure that the buildings are safe and secure.  Our secondary task is then to liaise with buildings insurers and contractors to minimise the potential for further damage and to commence the repair process as may be required.”
